The Department of Transport (DOT) regulates the commercial vehicles in the New York City. The different rules applicable to the commercial vehicles are found on the DOT website. And these are known as the New York City Traffic Rules. DOT lettering for tucks is addressed in the section 4–01, article (B). A vehicle that is found to be a commercial vehicle can get different benefits like it can be parked in the loading zones.

Requirement of lettering

Vehicles that are designed or modified for the transportation of services and goods can obtain commercial license plates provided by the Department of Motor Vehicles. DOT lettering is required for all types of commercial vehicles and there is no exception to this rule. DOT lettering identifies the owner of the vehicle and the place where the vehicle belongs to.

What kind of DOT lettering is required?

  1. The DOT lettering rules by the New York City Traffic rules state that the commercial vehicles ought to display the address and the name of the owner with the use permanent lettering 3 inches in length.
  2. The vehicle should show this information on both the sides, either on the sides of the vehicle or the middle of the doors of the vehicle.
  3. Additionally, the lettering should be in a color distinct from the paint on the vehicle. It should not be hidden due to the use of paint similar to the paint on the vehicle.
  4. The fascinating thing about DOT lettering is that it can be plain or fancy as per the desire of the owner.
  5. Some of the companies prefer to use peel and stick vinyl lettering for complying with the traffic regulations for commercial vehicles. On the other hand, there are some other companies that may require the use of painting or a brushing. Both the solutions are valid and can be chosen as per preference.

Some other lettering requirements

Commercial vehicles are also subject to regulations by some other authorities. This requires the owners to use some other types of lettering on the vehicle. The owners must also display the US DOT number, the legal name of the business, alongside the main address of the business.

The lettering should be present on both sides of the vehicle and must visit clearly during the day from a distance of 50 feet.
